Meet your Instructor - Nikki
“Hi I’m Nikki! I’m the Founder & Director of Dance Like a Mother. I started teaching Babywearing Dance in 2016 when my daughter Ellie was just 5 months old (madness!). I was a dancer for many years on a disco show and toured to many places around the world; Amsterdam, Isreal, Hartlepool :D. And then later as a Zumba instructor.
Initially I started these classes as a way to avoid the usual judgmental Mum groups and chats about poo, sleep and moaning about partners... there had to be more to motherhood than this, right?
It quickly became clear that there was no other class like this and the Mums (and Dads when they felt brave to come!), would tell me how much the classes meant to them and how they felt happier, healthier, made great friends and more bonded with their baby.
I’ve loved seeing the classes grow, seeing the joy and life-changing affect they have on the Mums that come and feel so proud to have such amazing women working alongside me. I sometimes can’t believe I get to do this for a living!
Hope to see you soon,
Nikki xx

“I didn’t just dance - I found myself again.
This class is pure magic: great music, zero judgement, and a room full of parents moving like we actually remembered who we were before the chaos.
My baby snoozed on my chest, I broke a sweat, and for the first time in ages I felt strong, light, and me. If you need a confidence boost, a mood lift, or just a moment to reconnect, this class delivers.
10/10 would dance with my tiny sidekick again and can’t wait for next week.”

We ask that all Mum’s have had their postnatal checkup and that babies are over 8 weeks old (corrected) and over 7lb in weight. If you have had a C-Section we ask you to wait 10 - 12 weeks before attending. If you are active and have been given the all clear by your health care professional ahead of 12 weeks, please feel free to book and just inform us at booking stage that you had a C-Section.
The age of babies in class ranges from 8 weeks up to 2 Years…however as long as you are comfortable wearing your baby you can come at any age up to toddler. We find that toddlers are happy to attend if they are used to being worn.
Many of our classes do book up in advance, so we always recommend booking ahead if you can. We hear A LOT “I just wish I’d come sooner!”.

No you don’t need your own carrier and they can be loaned for the class for Free [ just tick the box when booking]. All our Instructors are Peer Support or Consultant level Trained and will support you in fitting the carriers safe & comfy for class. We have carriers to fit all body shapes and babies ages. And all our carriers are washed and/or sanitized regularly (from those dribbly baby’s!)
Have your own carrier but need help? No problem, that’s what were here for! We are always happy to help you get your carrier fitted safe and comfortably and even give you some hints and tricks to help too.
We also have lots of information and tutorials on our babywearing page too, which can be found HERE. We also offer 121 sessions and workshops. This can also be found via the link. Some carriers aren’t suitable for class, so if you are unsure please take a look HERE
You won’t need to arrive early for carrier fitting and help, as we sort this during the first 10 minutes of class.

We don’t use narrow based carriers in our classes. These are where your baby's legs dangle straight down (Inc. Baby Bjorn, Mothercare/Mamas & Papas/Aldi own brand, Chicco, Babyway). Unfortunately these don’t provide the best support for the baby's spine or hips, especially for movement or activity. Many of these carriers also don’t provide good neck support. Don’t worry we aren’t leaping around! But we do want them to have good support on the nape of their neck, especially those who don’t have neck control yet.
We also ask you not to use Stretchy wraps, as they can sag and not offer enough support for class. These are amazing for newborns, but just not supportive enough for class.
If you are new to class, your instructor will contact you ahead of time to check If you require a carrier. But you can find out more about carriers not suitable HERE

No not at all! Two left feet are always welcome! Plus everyone is sleep deprived anyway! Our classes are active, but low impact and more about having fun, bonding with your baby and doing something for yourself. We believe in empowering women in their new found body and just enjoying getting active and having fun.
We have Mums, Dads and carers attend with all different fitness and dance abilities. Our routines are easy to follow and as all our Instructors have a Dance background, they will break everything down for you. It's just about having fun…defiantly NOT about getting the moves right!
-
We are here to guide and support you, so you and your baby feel as safe and happy as possible. During the class you will learn about safe babywearing and we are always aware of those that need adjusting or help during class. If you feel anxious or nervous, we totally understand and our instructors have all been where you are. They are super kind, friendly and approachable and we promise to do all we can to put you at ease.
All routines have been choreographed with the postnatal body in mind and all our instructors are trained in dance instruction, to ensure that the moves are carried out with care and awareness. The classes are designed to support women in getting gently active. building core strength, improving pelvic floor as well as posture and breathing.
We are an active class, but not a fitness class and believe that mental health, support, joy and community are more important than fitting into your pre-baby jeans (but you will get a bit of a workout!).

YES! We have had many twin and multiple Mums and Dads attend over the years. There is NO extra charge (the booking is for you, not them). We have a few options of how you can all take part in class. We will support you in making sure you are all feeling happy and safe and are happy to try whatever works best for you.
Our Instructors are more than happy to wear one of your babies for class. All our Instructors have carried their own babies in classes and are excellent at helping to keep your little one happy and calm throughout.
You can bring someone else for no extra charge and they can dance with you and carry one of your babies.
If they are sitting unaided you can tandem wear them. This is where you wear one on the back and one on the front. We have carriers that we can fit you in and get you all safe and comfy for class.
You can have one baby in the carrier and one in a car seat/pram.
We just ask that you get in touch with the instructor prior to booking if you would like the instructor to wear one of your babies. You can find their email on the timetable for the class you wish to attend.
When you book on there is an option to say you are bringing twins/multiples, so please just tick this.

We have older kids join us in class and dance alongside Mum or Dad. There is no extra charge for this. We even have teddy carriers available so they can join in! Or bring an i-pad & snacks…no judgment here! We just ask that you keep an eye on them and ensure they don’t become a trip hazard! The instructor may ask you to dance at the front/side to avoid them getting under foot.
In the holidays we have lots of older children attending. It's a great chance to do something as a family and get your older kids involved in a fun activity together.

Most babies fall asleep in class or just snuggle up to you. Babies who are younger and/or are used to being worn tend to relax and fall asleep quicker. The movement, music and being held close to the Mum/Dad/Caregiver is a very relaxing and comforting experience for them (similar to being in the womb).
We sometimes find that people say "my baby hates being in the carrier" or "they will never fall asleep!". But they are often surprised what a well fitting, comfy carrier and movement can do. Most parents say that on days when their baby is ill/teething/having a leap it helps to put the carrier on and dance around at home and it really helps to settle them.
If your baby needs to be fed, changed etc then it's very relaxed and you can tend to your baby as you wish. We do have time for this at the start of class though, so they can be settled in the class while you dance.
The main thing is that you stay relaxed and focus on enjoying the class. The more relaxed you are, the more they will be. Plus we are here to help you enjoy the class and feel at ease.

We totally understand how hard it can be to walk into a new class for the first time. Especially if you don’t know anyone. We have all been there too, as have most of our Mums.
The majority of Mums/Dads that attend don’t know anyone when they start. But we are very lucky to have the most welcoming and friendly instructors and Mums around. The majority of Mums attending make friends quickly and we foster relationships so many also meet outside of class. We have many that are still friends when their kids are 10 years old!
We have social time after each class, either at the venue or at a local coffee shop and arrange regular lunches and get togethers. We are a community above all else. This was the reason we started in 2016 and it still a huge part of who we are today.

You
Comfy clothing that you would wear to be active in. For example leggings and a t-shirt/vest.
Ideally trainers, or comfy pumps. Please don’t wear flip flops, sandals, crocs, ugg boots or heels as they are a trip hazard
Baby:
Comfy clothing. We recommend 1 layer as the carrier is classed as a layer. Too many layers or jumpers and you may both get too warm

We love a bit of pop! From current pop bangers such as Raye, Lizzo and Dua Lipa. To
Our classes are packed with feel-good tunes from current tunes, such as Raye, Lizzo and Dua Lipa. Plus cheesy pop and old school bangers, like The Spice Girls and Bewitched. And a few emotive ballads to get those snuggly, cuddle dances with your baby.
Remember dancing to songs in your bedroom with your mates as a kid…it’s like that for motherhood! If it makes you feel good…we play it!

YES! We have had many Mums in classes who are attending with their baby and also pregnant and those who are coming with bump for a dance.
It’s a great way to stay gently active, bond with your baby and meet other Mums and Parents in your area.
If you are attending with your baby and are pregnant, that’s not a problem. We can support you to babywear safely while pregnant and support you in any way we can to keep attending classes.
We just ask that you get the go ahead from your healthcare practitioner before attending class.
